During term 1 the Year 6 & 7 girls had been practising for the Glory Cup Soccer tournament. The girls had given up their lunchtimes and sometimes before school in order to practise. We came runner up just based on goals but we had so much fun!! The following is a recount based on a few of the students’ thoughts of the day:

On the 4th April 2012, Year 6 and 7 girls went to Hartfield Park to compete in the Glory Cup. The girls had trained very hard and arrived there ready as ever to play.

The first team we competed against were very good and they were the hardest team out of all the schools. In our first game Madison S scored our first goal for the day and we came a draw with that team. The second team we played ended up with the final result being Forest Crescent PS winning by one goal.

The third team we played ended up with us also winning. Our team goalies were Pamela V and Taylah E.

One of the teams didn’t show up so we had a very long lunch break. It was good to have a long break because it gave us time to practise a bit more and chill out with friends before our next and final game!!

Mrs Boddy was the coach and still did a great job although she was unwell. Many people got goals and they were very good. Mick, Kelly’s dad helped coach our team. Everyone had fun and they were good on the field.

It came down to us and team we drew against, but they scored 10 more goals than us, which made them the winners. Overall we came second and we got medals. The day went really fast and we had lots of fun!!

Macros in Our Lake

By Room 10 – 22nd February 2012 (Mrs Nowell)

Today we went down to the lake to see Richard and to look at some macro invertebrates. We had a lot of fun.

When we went to the lake we saw Richard catching some invertebrates in the lake. He bought them back and put them in trays so we could look at them.

Then Richard gave us a spoon each so we could catch some of the macros and put them in the ice cube trays to look at.

We used magnifying glasses to look at the macro invertebrates closer. It made them look bigger.

After that we had to identify the macros that we caught. Richard gave us a macro chart and we had to circle the ones we had in our ice cube trays.

Some of the macro invertebrates that we found in our lake were; backswimmers, diving beetles, non-biting midge worms, freshwater snails, dragonfly larvae, stonefly larvae, caddis fly larvae and water boatmen.

We learned that we have a healthy lake because we found some very sensitive macros and we had a lot of different types in our lake.

We had a lot of fun looking at the macro invertebrates and we learned a lot. We liked having Richard come out and show us what was in our lake.

Running Club 2012 – Years 4 – 7

The Forest Crescent Running Club will again be active during term 2, with training beginning on Thursday 10th May on the school oval, then each Monday and Thursday for the rest of the term. Training begins at 8am and concluding at 8.30 am. If it is raining then the session will be cancelled.

There will be a boundary line to follow around the oval. This will be measured so it can be discovered how many laps will be needed to complete a marathon. That is 42.195 kilometres. The number of laps will be recorded at the conclusion of each session. Every child who completes the marathon distance throughout the term will receive a certificate at the school assembly in recognition of their performance.

Over a seven week period, this is roughly 6km a week, or 3km per 30 minute session which is very achievable.

If your child is interested in participating this year, all your child needs to do is turn up for the sessions. Regular attendance is needed in order to achieve the marathon.

The school cross country is held this year on Tuesday 3rd July. This is a great way to have fun and get fit at the same time.

Throughout term one the year 3′s in room 30 have been studying the care of animals. On Tuesday 27th March, Mrs Pirouet ( one of our school’s relief teachers) brought in her dog, Tully. She gave a demonstration on washing and drying Tully and let everyone have a little wash of him as well. After she groomed him with special brushes and combs, she discussed what food he ate and showed his bedding and his toys. The students had plenty of questions, all of which Mrs Pirouet answered. Tully was very well behaved for the whole time. It was a wonderful, hands-on experience!

Another opportunity to become an Independent Public School: As indicated in our last newsletter, Expressions of Interest are now open for the selection of additional Independent Public Schools. Expressions of interest close at 4.00 pm on Thursday, 10 May 2012, providing school principals time to undertake community and staff consultation, ensuring that they are committed and prepared to assume greater autonomy, before putting in an expression of interest.

Further information for school communities on what it means to be an Independent Public School and how school communities can express an interest to become Independent Public Schools, can be found in the Prospectus, and in other information on the IPS website.

School communities are responding positively to the opportunity that the Independent Public Schools initiative gives them, to operate with greater autonomy in increased local decision making, particularly in the areas of school resources, finances and staffing.

This is another opportunity for public school communities across the State to have a greater say in how their local school is run. I encourage all parents to consider this invitation and decide whether our school is ready to benefit from being part of this exciting opportunity. An electronic (email) survey will be conducted with parents next week. In the meantime, please take the opportunity to read the Prospectus and to discuss with others widely.

The challenges that face our planet are immense, but never underestimate the possibility for change when we face these challenges with true common purpose. Hundreds of millions of people around the globe have given us a glimpse of what is possible. It is now time to go beyond the hour and show what can be done.

Jim Leape, Director-General WWF International

Held each year at 8:30pm on the last Saturday in March, Earth Hour is a WWF initiative which symbolises the collective power of individuals, businesses and governments to reduce our environmental impact on this one and only planet we call home.

A WWF initiative, Earth Hour is a simple idea that’s quickly turned into a global phenomenon.

Hundreds of millions of people switching off their lights for one hour, on the same night, all around the world to signal their care for the amazing planet we call home. Here in Australia in 2011, icons in every corner of the country switched off for the hour, from the Australian War Memorial to Parliament House to Perth Concert Hall to the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Almost 2,000 businesses, 334 schools and colleges, 154 councils, all 130 government departments (and even our 4 Arctic stations!) also joined the celebration of the planet.

So where did it all begin?

2007

In 2007, WWF-Australia inspired Sydney-siders to show their support for action on climate change in the first ever Earth Hour event. It showed that everyone, from children to CEOs and politicians, has the power to change the world they live in. More than 2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses in Sydney took part in this first year. Many Sydney icons also switched off for the hour including the Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House sails and the Luna Park face. The Coca-Cola sign at Kings Cross was switched off intentionally for the first time since the 1970s.

In 2008, the plan was to take Earth Hour to the rest of Australia. But then the City of Toronto, Canada, signed up and it wasn’t long before 35 countries and almost 400 cities and towns were part of the event. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. It said something compelling to the world: that the climate challenges facing our planet are so significant that change needs to be global.

2009

With the invitation to ‘switch off’ extended to everyone, Earth Hour became a global sustainability movement with over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially participating in 2009.

2010

In 2010, Earth Hour continued to grow as a global call to action to stand up, to take responsibility, and lead the global journey to a sustainable future. A record 128 countries and territories took part in this fourth year.

2011

From low-lying Pacific islands to the heights of the Himalayas, from the world’s mega cities to rural housing estates in Africa, across every continent Earth Hour again brought together the people of the world in a celebration of the planet. Iconic landmarks around the world, from the Eiffel Tower, to the London Eye and Big Ben, to Athens’ Acropolis to the India Gate, stood in darkness for the hour. Around the world, 5, 251 cities in 135 countries officially took part.
