The Australian Mathematics Competition sponsored by the Commonwealth (AMC) has been held annually since 1978. It has become the largest single event on the Australian education calendar, allowing students to attempt the same tasks on the same day in over 30 countries around the globe. By 2015, the AMC has attracted more than 14.5 million entries.

The AMC consists of test paper with 30 questions and time allowed is 60 minutes for the primary papers. Whilst completing the same test paper Year 4, 5 & 6 students are graded based on the performance of students from their year level, not against year levels above. (ie. Year 5 FCPS students graded against performance of all Year 5’s who sit the test)

Over 1,000 students share the prizes and around 50% of participants qualify to receive a Certificate of High Distinction, Distinction or Credit. All other entrants in the competition receive a Certificate of Participation or a Proficiency Certificate. All students are also provided with a detailed report showing how they performed on each problem with wider statistical rankings.

Prior to the students sitting the test they were withdrawn from class for a one hour session for four weeks in the lead up to the test, in order to work with the other students as they explored and familiarised themselves with the types of questions they would encounter, in doing so we worked on extending their mathematical logical, reasoning, critical thinking and operational skills with like –minded people.

We are pleased to announce that we had the following results for 2016

Year 4 Category: Four Distinctions, eight Credits, and three Proficiency grades.

Year 5 Category: One High Distinction, seven Distinctions, and four Credit grades.

Year 6 Category: One Distinction, three Credit grades, and nine Proficiency grades.

Special congratulations must go to Henarai (Year 5) who managed, through her performance, to place herself in the 98 percentile ranking and receive a High Distinction, meaning she is in the top 3% of her year level. Well done to Henarai and all the students for their performance, enthusiasm and giving it a go.
