Year 6: Tree Planting and Nyoongar Experience at Myalup

June 8, 2022

Tree Planting and Nyoongar Experience at Myalup

Dear Parents and Guardians of students in Rooms 5, 17 and 18,

We are fortunate to be able to participate in a tree-planting project funded by the PALS and supported by the Myalup Community Association at Myalup Beach, as well as participate in an indigenous experience. This excursion is a ‘hands-on’ learning experience, where students will see the effects of wind erosion on coastal dunes, take part in a program to help revegetate and stabilise the dunes at Myalup, and learn about the indigenous culture of the area. Mr Bruce Ivers from Trees4Change will be coordinating the tree planting on behalf of the Shire of Harvey and Myalup Community Association, and Mr David Collard (depending on availability), or another local indigenous elder will be facilitating the Nyoongar Experience.

The excursion will take place on Wednesday 8th June and will cost $10 which is subsidised for transport.

We will be required to depart school earlier than the normal time and be returning later than the end of the school day. An outline of the itinerary is below. While half the students are tree planting on the dunes the others will be participating in the Nyoongar Experience activities.

Tree Planting

  • 80% of students have tree planter & carrier.
  • 20% of students will be in the supply chain.
  • Students change roles halfway through the session.
  • Parents will help with quality control and keeping the students focused.

Parent Helpers and Planting. The key to speeding up the planting rate is to keep the kids supplied with seedlings and keep them focused on the job! We will try having 20% of the students as a supply chain from the seedling trailer on the beach to the planting site. They will be able to have a turn at planting halfway through each planting session. We are looking for 3 or 4 parent helpers from each class to assist. Parent helpers will work with teams of students either in the supply chain or planting. Please fill out the form below to volunteer. Your classroom teacher will then let you know if you are required to attend (and travel on the bus with us!)

Rain and Clothing. There is shelter in the event of heavy rain at the Myalup Community Hall, however, this is away from the dunes. In the event of heavy rain forecast, we may need to change the days at the last minute.  If light rain is forecast students will need raincoats and a second pair of shoes and socks, and the planting will go ahead. Please wear normal school uniform and bring an extra jumper to keep warm if it is a windy day. We will use the Rain Radar to check if showers are imminent.

Masks. Due to the distance being travelled, students are asked to bring a mask to wear on the bus. If a child forgets, we will supply one.

Food & Toilets. Students need to provide their own food for the day, 2 x crunch and sip and lunch. Students should bring a full water bottle and there will be opportunities to refill them. Please pack food and the water bottle in a labelled plastic bag, together with the second pair of shoes and socks if necessary. There are toilets at the Myalup Beach Car Park and the Myalup Community Hall. All students should go to the toilet before getting on the bus.

Please sign the permission slip below, fill in the relevant medical information and emergency contact details, returning it back to school by Tuesday 7th June. Should you wish to discuss this excursion further, please don’t hesitate to contact either your child’s classroom teacher or Mr Holmes.

Students are to be at class by 8.00am.  Parents will be required to be at school at 4.00pm to pick up students unless prior arrangements have been made in writing with the classroom teacher. (ie riding or walking home.)
