Mathspace is being implemented in 2024 across Years 3 to 6. The opportunity for our students to utilise this program is funded by our Parents & Citizens Association, and we thank them for that. Class teachers are being upskilled on this program, though some teachers in the school did trial the program in the latter half of 2023. Parent emails (the first parent contact email on our database) have been attached to their child’s accounts so that you can receive updates on your child’s progress and reminders if work set by the teacher is due.
To determine the value of the program in regard to our students’ achievements, we will be monitoring our students’ achievements in mathematics over the long term using our NAPLAN and other systemic assessments that the school uses. A study has shown that Mathspace, when used properly, significantly adds to a student’s mathematical ability. (Read Here)
Mathspace is an innovative online mathematics program tailored to students ranging from ages 7 to 18. It has garnered widespread acclaim and is utilised by schools across Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and India. The program’s adaptive learning model customises the educational experience for each student, ensuring that they receive the support and guidance they need based on their individual learning needs.
Furthermore, Mathspace has partnered with esteemed educator Eddie Woo to create a video hub aligning Woo’s educational content with various state curricula across Australia. This partnership exemplifies the program’s commitment to enhancing the learning experience for students. The program includes an interactive textbook with work examples, video tutorials, and video work examples.
It is worth noting that Mathspace was developed in Australia. Student data is stored on secure Australian servers, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations. The Department of Education Third Party Software Guidelines also permit the use of Mathspace within schools.
Several local high schools in the area, both government and non-government, have successfully integrated Mathspace into their middle and early high school mathematics programs. By introducing our students to this platform, we aim to facilitate a seamless transition into high school-level mathematics.
The flexibility and differentiation offered by the program are one of the many benefits it provides for the numeracy development of the student. Mathspace is a program that offers individual reports and provides data that drives the forward planning for teachers. Mathspace provides flexibility with how it can be utilised in the classroom for pre-teaching, post-teaching, or student-driven learning of numerical concepts.
One of the program’s key features is its ability to adapt the presentation of educational material in response to students’ performance and responses. The program considers past performance, and Mathspace selects questions most suited to each student’s level of understanding. In addition, the program offers invaluable support in the form of hints and video tutorials, providing students with the tools they need to navigate through challenges confidently.
At a school level, the same program used by all teachers from Year 3 to Year 6 provides more individual differentiation in student learning than the static program offered by the concept of one textbook suits everyone. Also, the program provides longitudinal data on students’ numeracy progress that teachers can review as the student progresses through classes and year levels.
