Traditionally, our Year 2 and 4 students have had the opportunity to visit the Perth Concert Hall to watch the West Australian Symphony Orchestra perform. Unfortunately, the Concert Hall is under redevelopment. This year, we were fortunate to have WASO visit us at school, and the Choir and Band students joined the Year 2s and 4s to see “Libby Meets the Orchestra”. These experiences give students the chance to see and hear professional musicians playing a wide range of instruments — sparking curiosity and perhaps inspiring some to learn an instrument themselves.
The State Government coordinates an Instrumental Music Program in which our school participates. Each year, selected Year 5 and 6 students are invited to join based on music testing conducted in Year 4. These students make up our school band.
Equally valuable was the opportunity for students to experience being part of an audience at a live performance. Our senior students led the way, modelling attentive and respectful audience behaviour throughout the concert. Experiences like this help students appreciate live music while learning how to engage appropriately as audience members.
