Swimming Notes
- Students will travel by bus to the Gosnells Leisure World to the swimming pool.
- Before their departure, students can change into their bathers at school (bathers either bring in a plastic bag or wear underneath their school uniform) & wear their school uniform over their bathers to the pool & suitable footwear (in this case, thongs or slip-ons). Students must change back to their everyday footwear upon returning to school. Swimming goggles & caps are permitted; please ensure your child’s name is written on them. Students will take home their wet bathers and towel in their plastic bags.
- Students ordering lunches from the canteen will be catered for, but students may need to consider their departure & return time.
- Children with long hair must have it tied back before swimming. It is not appropriate to wear jewellery or bring valuables to swimming lessons.
- Any children unsure of their swimming stage (for parents who marked “Unsure, please grade”) will be assessed before allocation to a class. If a stage change is necessary, parents will be sent a note from the head swim instructor. Stages 1 to 15 are offered at pool centres.
- Students who have attempted the same stage three times (in-term swim classes only) without passing need to tick the appropriate box on the stage form and attach copies of the last three certificates showing these attempts.
- Parents of a child who has a severe medical problem (epilepsy or diabetes, etc.) are encouraged to attend the swimming session when their child is swimming to assist in monitoring their child. These parents need to enter the pool through the front door of the pool complex when their child arrives at the pool. These parents are excluded from paying spectator fees but have to make their way to the pool as space on the bus is at a premium. Please note in the section “Medical Details” if you can assist in monitoring your child’s health or notify Mr Combes so arrangements can be made between the school and swimming centre. The swim centre does require a list of names of parents/guardians who are there for supervision.
- Supervision at the pool is shared between the pool and school staff. Misbehaving students will be entered into the daily swimming file for a follow-up meeting with the school’s deputies, who will inform the child’s parents if necessary. If students continually pose a hazard to themselves or others, they will be removed from swimming classes. Students removed from swimming for medical or behavioural reasons will only be able to receive a refund on pool entry costs (as transport costs are a shared cost).
- Due to concerns about swimming lessons in a public environment, we have felt the need to be vigilant with the access to change rooms. If your child needs the toilet at swimming lessons, then these procedures will take place;
- Students will ask their swimming instructor and then notify a teacher.
- The teacher will supervise from outside the change-room area.
- The student will inform the teacher when they have finished and walk back to their swimming group.
- After their swimming, students will be provided with time to get changed at the Leisure World’s change rooms. Where possible, the change rooms will be supervised by FCPS staff.
What Each Child Should Bring For Swimming
- Come to school with bathers under school uniform or in a named, heavy-duty plastic bag. Remember your towel.
- Slip-on shoes or thongs to wear on the bus as shoes can be left at school (optional). Children cannot wear thongs all day at school and must have regular school shoes to change back into on return to school.
- Please ensure ALL articles of clothing are marked with your child’s name to avoid confusion when children are changing. If your child has asthma, please ensure that they bring their Ventolin & spacer. These and all other medications will be held by the duty teacher for the duration of the class and then, depending on the medication, handed back to the children at the end of their swimming class or returned to the medical room.
Non-Swimmers
Children who do not attend swimming lessons will be supervised by teaching staff back at school with a work package provided by the child’s teacher. Normal class programmes may be modified for the duration of the swimming program.
