The first-round Expression of Interest offers will be handed out in Term 4, Week 4.
All students and parents have been urged to consider their applications to the IMSS music program in light of expectations and, depending on whether the student meets the selection criteria set by IMSS and Forest Crescent Primary School, as outlined in the Expression of Interest letter.
- Step One: Expression of Interest Form sent out no later than Friday 6th November, Term 4. PLEASE RETURN the Expression of Interest Form by Thursday 12th November, Term 4, to Ms Britten.
- Step 2: The school will send formal offers no later than Monday 16th November, Term 4.
- Step 3: Formal Offers RETURNED no later than Monday 23rd November (can be returned earlier)
- Step 4: Parents can attend (not mandatory) the Parent Information Evening on November 30th, December 1, 2 and 3rd (meeting details to be announced on the FCPS school website at a later date).
Students will receive tuition for 30 minutes per week (within normal class time), attend school band practice for 40 minutes per week at lunchtime (starting in Term 2, 2027; times to be advised), and practise at home several days per week. Your instrumental teachers are very supportive but will expect students to practice at home to continue progressing. If extra practice at home is required, then the student will be expected to apply themselves to meet their learning goals.
Before accepting a place in the program, both students and their parents should carefully consider the commitment required to learn instrumental music, particularly if it clashes with other interests such as sport, ballet, or PEAC classes. If IMSS lessons clash with another extracurricular activity, IMSS must be the priority. Overcommitment to several activities, which creates competing demands on student time, is a major factor in student dropout from instrumental music in the first two to three years.
It is frustrating for both IMSS and the school to have a student sign up for the program and then, partway through Year 5, leave the program. This means that another Year 5 student was denied a place in the program at the start of 2027.
The Department of Education, not individual schools, determines the time for IMSS lessons on the 2027 school timetable.
Note that the music grades awarded by the Forest Crescent music teacher and class performance may be considered when deciding the final selection of students.
Students accepting flute, clarinet, or brass will meet the IMSS woodwind and brass instrumental teachers at a time to be determined to be tested and evaluated to see if the student has any issues with the mouthpiece of these instruments.
Parents are urged not to purchase instruments (guitars and other instruments) until a final selection is confirmed in writing. Instrumental teachers can also advise on preferred instrument brands.
