“Forest Crescent Primary School is honoured to win the Woolworths Junior Landcare Award. Our school community is focused on sustainability, and the award recognises the students’ passion for improving the environment by being involved in several Tree Planting programs throughout the year to improve animal habitats and redress Wheatbelt salinity problems. Students knowledge and understanding was also enhanced in learning to Care for Country by participating  in our Two Knowledges Walk with an Indigenous Elder and European Ecologist and Zoologist.”

Andrew Holmes – Principal Forest Crescent Primary School.

Winning Landcare projects were announced yesterday, 19th November, at the 2021 Western Australia Landcare Awards at the Kalamunda Community Centre, where community landcarers from across the state came together to celebrate their impressive achievements.

The awards celebrate the incredible efforts of individuals and groups, young and old, to protect Western Australia’s natural resources, stewarding a more resilient landscape for the future. The award winners and their projects are diverse, ranging from farming and Indigenous land management to educational and mapping tools.

Winning the 2021 WA Woolworths Junior Landcare Team Award recognises Forest Crescent Primary School students from Year 4 to Year 6 who were not only involved in several tree planting projects throughout 2021 but also the efforts from previous years where our students tackled other tree planting projects. It is the recognition of students and staff who want to impact the environment positively. Their efforts promote healthier soils, reduce the effect of salinity, restore the land to its original ecosystem and the natural habitat for native wildlife, reduce greenhouse gases, and provide natural carbon sinks.

Forest Crescent Primary School’s sustainability focus, where we came from initially, was initiated by our Sustainability Coordinator, Mrs Tanya Smith. She instilled a similar environmental empathy in staff and students many years ago through her passion and hard work and promoted many in-school sustainability programs.

The Tree Planting projects, supported by Mr Andrew Holmes (FCPS Principal)and Mr Bruce Ivers (from Trees4Australia), is one of the large scale sustainability programs that the school participates in.
